The Virus we all know as " Kapugedera"

Chamara Kapugedera was once considered as one of the brightest young cricketing stars of Sri Lanka. He was added to the Sri Lankan team at a very young age and really performed well in his first few matches including a memorable test 50 against the Englishmen at Trent Bridge in 2006; which we later went on to win. He followed that success by playing some crucial 50's during the 2007-08 CB series and suddenly all Sri Lankan fans thought that we have found some great young talent.

Sadly though, that assumption has gone horribly wrong. Today, he has become a virus in the Sri Lankan Cricket team. A virus, the Sri Lankan cricket officials have not yet decided to get rid of. It is just sad, much to the anger of all Sri Lankan Cricket fans.

It is no secret that "CK" has been failing to score any productive runs for long time now. He has played exactly 90 one day internationals to date and has yet to score a century.  There was a time where the guy was never dropped from the first eleven even though he failed to get pass double figures consistently.  Even today, whenever a player gets injured, he is considered the best replacement. The fans began to hate him gradually and now they don't like him at all. Especially after the recent two failures in Australia and Bangladesh where he was out, first ball.

The real reasons behind this Kapugedera fiasco is yet to be known and the fans are demanding answers from the selection committee as well as the government for persisting with him. Selecting him for the World Cup final last year as well as or the crucial 3rd final against the Aussies was totally uncalled for and the results were evident from the guy's performances in both of those finals.

The blame for these kinds of selection blunders should be solely put on the cricket selectors and as fans we should not blame Kapu all the time for his bad performances. The Sri Lankan Cricket board should at least take some action and help him to get his technique right and improve his skills. Also, if the selectors really wants to play him the eleven, he should be given a chance to come a bit higher in the batting order rather than coming in late. The guy seem to have temperament where he likes to build an innings before going for his shots. Sadly, every time when he gets a chance he ends up playing at the most tensed situations of the match.

If he continues this way, he will surely become more than a "walking wicket" for opposition bowlers and it will be such a waste of a talent who earlier showed great promise of being one of Sri Lanka's Best.

Just give the guy a break, drop him and give him a chance to improve his game. If that is not done, then Chamara Kapugedera will surely become an “incurable virus”, hated by almost every cricket fan in Sri Lanka.

Cheers!!
